Village News – FLAGSHIP

One does not have to look far in The Landings to discover the incredible talent of many of our residents. Flagship’s “artist in residence” Gretchen Phillips once again stole the show at the Fine Arts Competition by taking first place with her painting “Fruit Cocktail.” The depth of the colors in the painting was evident even to those of us who can barely draw a stick figure. Kathy Zielie also entered two unique pieces of art with the help of Gretchen, which were created by gathering lint from the ladies of Flagship over the past year and molding them into sculptures of an egg (shown above the photo of the first-place artwork) and pieces of fruit. Well done, ladies!

The Flagship ladies had another big night at bingo. Kathy Tyska won for the second month in a row, along with Carol Watson, Marilyn Collins and, drumroll please, Kathy Zielie, who won $500 and has won in Bingo four times in a row over the last year or so. Is there something in the Flagship water???

They say that traveling leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller. Anne and Jim Murray returned after 22 days cruising and sightseeing from Argentina, around Cape Horn, to Chile. Starting in Buenos Aires, they visited the Presidential Palace where Eva Peron gave her impassioned speeches to the poor. Visiting a cattle ranch outside the city, they were entertained by gauchos who showcased their equestrian skills, tasted their first Argentinian barbecue, and later experienced the passion and elegance of the tango.

Other stops included the Falkland Islands where Great Britain and Argentina fought a war in 1982 and lovely beaches where penguins thrived. The Chilean fjords, glaciers, and snowcapped volcanoes were spectacular as well as the vibrant city of Santiago. What a trip of a lifetime!
