Landings Fishing Club

Captain Lefty (aka LeRoy Fleming) and Admiral Marybeth Maile.

There was a free dinner—that’s right, a free dinner. Well, you may call it that, although you first must be a member of the Landings Fishing Club (LFC).

Each year the LFC celebrates another great season. In late March the Admiral gathers his or her Captains, Commanders, or Bosun’s mates to convert the Helm Club into a nautical feast. Old King Neptune smiled at the results produced by Admirals Mike and Marybeth Maile. Lots of gear, lures, nets, and bobbers hanging from the ceiling gave all the “swabbies” entering the illusion of an underwater world.

For a moment I thought the guitars were going to play “Victory at Sea.” “The Strings” played music throughout the evening. The music, played from appetizers through desserts, ranged from oldies to current. A talented vocalist and even a great saxophone solo gave the group the feeling of a dinner club outing.

“The Strings” entertained all through the dinner.

Fish and chicken with savory scalloped potatoes with a splash of green broccoli was served buffet style. For dessert a blackberry, blueberry, and cherry cobbler was served with whipped cream of course. The fish shaped bottles of wine were in the middle of each table.

Other than the food the main attraction was who gets the wine? Once again LeRoy Fleming read the Captain Lefty’s fishing trip for the Wright family while passing the bottle. When the words right or left were spoken, the last pass ended up in the hands of the winner of the wine.

There were more winners with many, many door prizes and the always favorite, 50/50 for cash. Dancing to “The Strings” with smiles all around, the LFC sadly said “All Ashore.” Old salts became landlubbers once again but not before saluting the Admirals and crew for a fantastic voyage.
