Swilcan Bridge, one of the most recognized landmarks in golf.

I have been waiting awhile to write about a great adventure fellow 9 Hole member, Virginia Miller, experienced last year. She played golf on the Castle, the Jubilee, the Eden, and the Himalayas golf courses at St Andrews, Scotland and the Kingarrock Hickory Course near St Andrews. I consider that a trip of a lifetime and one I could not even fathom trying to do.

An interesting fact about the Himalayas course: it started as a putting (only) course in the mid-1800’s for the “delicate” ladies. Women were playing at St Andrews long before they were fully accepted. Women were not admitted as members until 2014.

I don’t know exactly how many days Virginia was on golf courses, but she played 18 holes three days in a row and walked two of those days. She confirmed that she trained for this big adventure. Virginia stated that having a caddie tagging along was a great confidence booster. He picked a certain club, which she might not have chosen herself, to hit the perfect shot. What a great experience to have your personal caddie at your beck and call!

On this side of the pond, I have noticed smaller groups of players since the season is officially over. A lot of us are at our homes elsewhere and playing other courses but I bet nothing could beat St Andrews.

Here are the results of our May 1 league play. Winning team members on the front were Grace Berg, Anne Murray, Brenda Collins and Susie Duca. On the back nine, the first-place team members were Suzanne McGauley, Jan Roberts, Lynda Schmitt and Mary Rea. Closest to the pin on the front was Bonnie Fritch.

Remember, all golfers are responsible for marking and identifying their own ball. In order to identify your ball, you may lift it after announcing your intention to your opponents. That ball may not be cleaned or substituted and must be returned to its original position.

Enjoy the game.
