STEAMBOAT BEND

April is a pivotable month at Steamboat Bend (SBB). The seasonal residents start to travel to their homes in the north, and our year-round members look forward to enjoying the relative quiet of summer in Florida. And after a month of planned course renovations, golf tee times will be much more open.

The second Steamboat Bend Beer Pong tournament started at McCoy Pavilion. It took two sessions. In beer pong, teams of two or more players take turns throwing ping-pong balls into the opponent’s cups. If the team “makes” a cup, the contents of the cup are consumed by the other team, and the cup is removed from the table.

When the final rounds being cancelled due to unplayable weather at McCoy Pavilion, the Beer Pong Captains and Organizers, Michele Cavanagh, Mas Fukushima and Jan Robertson were able to schedule the finals at the SBB pool area. Pat Nymberg (a newcomer to SBB but rumored to be a Beer Pong champ in a previous life) and Derek Greenslade (the returning champion!) won the tournament.

Our Beer Pong champs Derek Greenslade and Pat Nymberg. Hats off to Jan and Michele for another successful gathering and a special thanks to Mas for the fancy players bracket chart.

Also thanks to our very active Social Committee: Peggy Brennan, Holly Lukas, Bonnie Fritch, Peg Halpin, Maggie Alexander and Joanne Russell for all the events they plan and publicize.

The pool continues to be our social activities hub for Mahjong, Euchre, Mexican Train and Rummikub which pop up whenever friends arrive with the games, some scheduled and some impromptu. Visitors are always welcome but need to be sure to ask about the house rules. A lively discussion was overheard when Ohio players found out that Kentucky and Michigan players always play “screw the dealer.” It is these friendly times that are our best way to welcome new residents.

Please remember to send stories of summer travels and SBB happenings to Marcia at [email protected] with digital photos of course. Happy Trails!
