Well, here is my final article until the fall when the Northerners return and Riverside starts bumping again!
In keeping with past editions let’s talk some history, social events and, of course, our featured Riverside resident.
Without further ado, let’s go back in time. In the early 1930s the Riverside area was owned by a family from Ohio (not the Moores). The owners, the Sutphin family, built a number of wooden cabins along the river and used the property as a family and corporate retreat. Later, the cottages were used to house people who worked at The Landings, but most of the land was an orange grove. Rumour has it the favorite drink of the Sutphin’s was vodka and orange juice.
In 1989 the cottages were torn down and the marina was built. Magnolia Pointe, just north of Riverside, was also owned by the Sutphin’s but rumour was they were not allowed to sell or develop the land until Mrs. Sutphin passed away. I was just kidding about the vodka and orange juice drink.
The photo below shows former residents of the wooden cottages. Not really, but what a good-looking bunch at today’s Riverside Marina.

As for recent social events, Marina Director Bob Mahoney organized a pub crawl/poker run to Bradenton. Some of the ‘escapees’ from Riverside included Carol Garner, Rosann Lamore, Paula Mahoney, all around ‘bad girl’ Marilee and her sidekick Don ‘the Juan’ Simon.

Thanks to Judy (aka DJ Judy) who recently hosted another block party and, despite several folks having already headed north for the summer, a fun time was had by all. As always, good food, good music, and good company!

Now, for the big reveal of ‘Who Am I’ from my last article. If you recall the resident is from PA and her Pa and Ma were in the navy. Pa thought about buying in Gulf Harbour but decided to build in Riverside in the mid 1990s. Given her Dutch and Scottish lineage it’s surprising she gives away ‘freebies’ on her morning walks. Drum roll please – the resident is . . . Susie Nicklas, the dog treat lady and wonderful walker who sets tails a wagging! Pictured below Susie and some gals who thought it was winter.
I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe summer. Cheers to all until we get together again in the fall!
